Counting of swamp deer on the basis of 'head count' has begun at the Suklaphanta Wildlife Reserve from Sunday. The swamp deer is enlisted in the list of rare wildlife. It is said the largest herd of swamp deer in Asia is found at this reserve.
A team of 20 wildlife experts along with five elephants has been mobilized to conduct the three-day counting, according to Chief at the Reserve, Yubraj Regmi.
The Reserve has started counting the swamp deer regularly for the past some years. A total of 1,743 swamp deer were found in the Reserve last year. The Reserve expects the number of swamp deer will increase this year.
